Information Literacy
Standards

Standard 1

Library Mission Statement

The mission of Queens Vocational and Technical High School Library is to teach, motivate, encourage, and nurture students to seek information independently for personal interest and educational enlightenment. Our library seeks through collaboration to educate students and empower them with information literacy skills to thoroughly prepare them for a productive future.

Library Rules

Students are welcome to the library during any free periods; to use internet for research, use Microsoft Word, borrow books, and read.

  1. All students must show their program to Ms. Lewis and sign in.
  2. There is no food, drinks or gum chewing allowed.
  3. Students cannot access e-mail, chat rooms, or play computer games.
  4. Please ask Ms. Lewis before you print.
  5. You must remain in the center the entire period.

Borrowing Rules

  1. A student may borrow one book for 2 weeks. The book may be renewed once
    for an additional two weeks if needed.
  2. To borrow a book a student must: show their student I.D. card or program to
    Mrs. Lewis and fill out the book card.
  3. A fine of 10 cents a day will be charged for overdue books.
  4. Student must pay for any lost book or other material.
  5. Return all books and materials to the librarian, do not return them to the shelf or leave on the desk.

Copies

You are allowed to use the copy machine in the library. Copies are 10 cents each. You must ask the librarian for assistance prior to using the machine.

Computers

There are four computers available for student use. You are assigned a computer by Ms.Lewis and you are held accountable for its condition during your use.

Internet

The Librarian will supervise students when using the internet. There are many websites available for reference use including:

Search engines are directories, which are great for finding general information on popular topics and for narrowing down your subject. They are also good way to explore a topic and to learn about related topics.

Plagiarism

What is it? It is the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work.
